“Base Tan” For Summer Is Harmful for Skin – May Cause Cancer, Says Consumer Reports

When summer hits, everybody spends more time in the sun, especially those that head to the beach or lake for vacation. Moreover, plenty of prepare for that vacation by getting a “base tan.”

The thought of progressively easing the skin into sun exposure has been around for many years. Many individuals see it as a good thing. However, Consumer Reports warns: it could be more harmful than helpful.

Tan is an indication of skin damage, says Consumer Reports Health Editor Trisha Calvo. “The sunlight can injure the DNA in skin cells, and that causes them to darken to forestall additional harm. Nevertheless, a base tan will provide you with far less protection than using sunscreen.”

A better idea for the most effective vacation is to take many steps to defend yourself from the sun’s harmful rays.

It is always a good idea to cover-up with sun-protective clothes and a hat,” Calvo says. “And at all times use a broad-spectrum sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher on exposed skin. You’ll want to apply it 15 minutes earlier than you go outside, and every two hours or after swimming or sweating closely.

Two of Consumer Reports’ topmost excellent buy sunscreens are Equate Walmart Ultra Lotion SPF 50 and Trader Joe’s Spray SPF 50-plus.

Should you resolve to tan the safer approach, with a temporary self-tanner, know that it doesn’t shield you from UV damage. You continue to want sunscreen!

Additionally, Consumer Reports says most sunscreens stay stable and stay valid for three years. If your sunscreen does not have a use-by date and you can’t keep in mind while you purchased it, do not rely on it to maintain you from burning!
